Advancing Our Understanding of Depression, Emotion, and the Brain

Effective psychological treatment should be informed by more than theory. Research helps us understand how mental health conditions develop, why people experience them differently, and how evidence-based psychological treatments can contribute to meaningful change.

Dr. Delaparte's academic research and peer-reviewed publications have explored the intersection of clinical psychology, depression, cognitive behavioral therapy, emotional regulation, personality, and neuroscience.

Her published research includes studies examining the neural systems involved in depression and emotional regulation, structural connectivity within the brain, differences between anxious and non-anxious depression, predictors of treatment response, and neurological changes associated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

This scientific background complements the evidence-based philosophy of Bridges Psychology: psychological care should be grounded in research while remaining responsive to the individual person receiving treatment.

Research Areas

Depression & the Brain

Major depressive disorder is complex. Two people who meet criteria for depression may experience substantially different symptoms, levels of anxiety, emotional responses, and responses to treatment.

Dr. Delaparte has contributed to research investigating the neurobiological characteristics associated with depression, including studies using advanced neuroimaging techniques to examine white matter pathways and structural connectivity within the brain.

This work includes research comparing anxious depression with non-anxious depression and examining white matter connectivity in major depressive disorder.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy & Emotion Regulation

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most extensively researched forms of psychotherapy.

Several of Dr. Delaparte's publications have investigated CBT for depression from a neuroscience perspective, including research examining emotional reactivity, emotion regulation, and changes associated with treatment.

This work contributes to a larger scientific effort to understand not simply whether psychotherapy can be effective, but what may be happening within the brain as people learn different ways of understanding and responding to emotional experiences.

Predicting Treatment Response

Mental health treatment is not universally effective in exactly the same way for every individual. An important area of psychiatric research therefore involves identifying characteristics that may eventually help clinicians better understand who is most likely to benefit from particular interventions.

Dr. Delaparte has contributed to research examining whether neuroimaging and structural brain connectivity may provide information associated with treatment response, including research involving selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Adolescent Mental Health & Development

Adolescence represents an important period of neurological, emotional, and psychological development.

Dr. Delaparte's research has also examined brain structure and connectivity in adolescents, including relationships among the orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala, personality, and the subsequent development of depressive disorders.

Understanding these developmental relationships may contribute to the broader scientific effort to identify vulnerability to mental health difficulties and better understand how depression develops.
